The Real Living Wage is independently calculated each year based on essential living costs such as housing, energy, food, childcare and everyday essentials. Unlike the government’s National Living Wage (a statutory minimum calculated from median earnings), the Real Living Wage is voluntary, higher and designed to ensure people can live, not just survive.

What Is the Real Living Wage?

The Real Living Wage is set by the Living Wage Foundation and is based on what employees need to meet actual living costs across the UK.

It is currently £12.60 across the UK, with a higher London rate of £13.85 to reflect increased costs of living in the capital. These rates are reviewed annually.

  • Applies to all staff aged 18+, including regular third‑party contractors.
